To find how many days until your birthday, take your birthday in the current year. If it has not happened yet, count the days from today to that date. If it has already passed this year, count to your birthday next year instead. The birthday countdown does this in one step and also shows the age you are turning and the weekday it falls on.

That is the whole method. Below is why each part works, and the one rule that catches people out.

Pick the right year

The only decision is which year’s birthday to count to. Compare your birthday this year with today:

  1. If your birthday this year is still ahead, count from today to that date.
  2. If your birthday this year has already passed, switch to next year’s birthday and count to that.

This keeps the countdown positive and always pointing at the next birthday rather than one that has gone.

Count whole days, not the birthday itself

The number you want is the full days between today and the birthday. The birthday is the day you reach at the end, so it is not counted as an extra day on top. A birthday tomorrow shows as one day, and on the morning of the birthday the count is zero. If you would rather count “days involved”, including both today and the birthday, add one to the figure.

The 29 February rule

A birthday on 29 February only has a true date in leap years. The common approach is to count the birthday as 28 February in other years, so the countdown runs every year rather than freezing for three years at a time. The birthday countdown uses this rule, so a leap-day birthday still gets a yearly number.

Days, weeks and sleeps

Once you have the day count, the same gap can be shown other ways. Divide by seven for whole weeks plus leftover days, which helps when planning around weekends. For a child, the plain day count works as a “sleeps to go” number. Enter a birth date in the birthday countdown to see the days, the weeks and the age being turned at once.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count the days until my birthday?
Take your birthday in the current year. If it has not happened yet, count the days from today to that date. If it has already passed, use next year's birthday instead and count to that. The birthday countdown does this for you and also shows the age you are turning.
What happens if my birthday is on 29 February?
In a year that has no 29 February, the countdown treats your birthday as 28 February, so you get a countdown every year instead of only in leap years. In a leap year it counts down to 29 February as normal.
Does the day of my birthday count as a day?
The figure is the number of full days from today until the birthday, so the birthday itself is the day you arrive at rather than an extra day. On the morning of your birthday the countdown shows zero.
