Frequently asked questions
- How is a star sign worked out from a date?
- Each western zodiac sign covers a fixed range of calendar dates, for example Leo runs from 23 July to 22 August. The calculator matches the birth month and day to the range it falls in and returns that sign, along with its element and ruling planet.
- What about dates on the cusp between two signs?
- The calculator uses the common date boundaries, where each sign runs up to the day before the next sign begins. A date right on a boundary is assigned to the sign that starts on that day. Exact sign boundaries can shift by a day in some years in stricter astrology, but the common dates are what most charts use.
- Does the birth year change the star sign?
- No. The western zodiac sign depends only on the month and day, so two people born on the same day in different years share the same sign. The year matters for the Chinese zodiac instead, which is a separate calculator.
- Does this work offline and is anything sent to a server?
- The calculation runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere, and once the page has loaded it keeps working with no connection. There is no sign-up and no limit on how many dates you check.
